TOP9 things i wanted to see in the deathly hallows part 1 movie (but didn’t)

the last installment of the harry potter movies is just around the corner and like most of you, i’m already in harry potter mode. i’ve re-read the books. re-watched the movies. reblogged the posts. relived the memories. in fact, the only reason i’m updating this blog is to post this.

although i know it’s hard to squeeze every single information from the book into the script, there are some things that i wish were included in the first harry potter and the deathly hallows film. here they are:

    1. bill and fleur’s wedding

fleur was wearing a very simple white dress and seemed to be emitting a strong, silvery glow. while her radiance usually deemed everyone else by comparison, today it beautified everybody it fell upon. ginny and gabrielle, both wearing golden dresses, looked even prettier than usual, and once fleur had reached him, bill did not look as though he had ever met fenrir greyback.

yes, i know it was briefly shown in the deathly hallows part one, but i really wanted to see how happy bill looked while fleur was walking down the aisle. honestly, i had high hopes about this wedding because i thought they were somehow going to make up for the exclusion of greyback’s attack in half-blood prince, that’s why i was a bit disappointed when they only showed the reception - and not the wedding ceremony itself - in the movie. but, oh well, i’d just take all the bill weasley i can get.

    2. kreacher’s story

“and he ordered - kreacher to leave - without him. and he told kreacher - to go home - and never to tell my mistress - what he had done - but to destroy - the first locket. and he drank - all the potion - and kreacher swapped the lockets - and watched… as master regulus… was dragged beneath the water… and…”

you’ve go to give kreacher a lot of respect after reading that… unwillingly following voldemort’s orders… involuntarily drinking potion, narrowly escaping from the inferi, reluctantly leaving his beloved master to die… it makes you realize the injustice that house elves had to live with in the wizarding world. if it doesn’t make you want to wear a s.p.e.w. badge, then i don’t know what else will.

    3. harry and dudley’s farewell

“er - no, they don’t,” said harry. “they think i’m a waste of space, actually, but i’m used to -“

    “i don’t think you’re a waste of space.”

one of the best things about the deathly hallows book was that almost everybody had the chance to be vindicated - and that included dudley dursley. as you all know, dudley and harry had a very touching moment during the third chapter of the book and it was such a pity to be excluded from the movies since it was one of those rare moments when dudley truly saw harry as his cousin.

    4. harry and lupin’s confrontation

“my kind don’t usually breed! it will be like me, i am convinced of it - how can i forgive myself, when i knowingly risked passing on my own condition to an innocent child? and if, by some miracle, it is not like me, then it will be better off, a hundred times so, without a father of whom it must always be ashamed!”

the exclusion of harry and lupin’s fight in grimmauld place is totally understandable - since the details of tonks and lupin’s relationship were pretty much left out of the half-blood prince anyway. but still. lupin’s revelation of his vulnerability and insecurities would perfectly highlight david thewlis’ amazing acting skills.

    5. lily’s letter

    dear padfoot,

thank you, thank you, for harry’s birthday present! it was his favorite by far. one year old and already zooming along on a toy broomstick, he looked so pleased with himself, i’m enclosing a picture so you can see…

i wonder how they would explain the relevance of the second page of the letter and the torn picture of lily that snape kept when they didn’t even include this in the first deathly hallows movie. oh, wait! don’t tell me they’re going to leave out this part as well!

    6. ron’s birthday gift

“this isn’t your average book,” said ron. “it’s pure gold: twelve fail-safe ways to charm witches. explains everything you need to know about girls. if only i’d had this last year i’d have known exactly how to get rid of lavender and i would’ve known how to get going with… well, fred and george gave me a copy, and i’ve learned a lot. you’d be surprised, it’s not all about wandwork, either.”

it was only a minor detail in the story, yes, but it would really be nice to see ron excitedly explaining the book to harry. besides, couldn’t you just picture how funny it would be to see rupert grint, giving the thumbs up sign while mouthing “good one!” after harry complimented mrs. weasley’s baking skills?

    7. wormtail’s mercy

the silver fingers slackened. harry had not expected it: he wrenched himself free, astonished, keeping his hand over wormtail’s mouth. he saw the ratlike man’s watery eyes widen with fear and surprise: he seemed just as shocked as harry at what his hand had done, at the tiny, merciful impulse it had betrayed, and he continued to struggle more powerfully, as though to undo that moment of weakness.

the manner by which wormtail died in the movie is different from that of the book. in the movie, his death was caused by a spell casted by dobby whereas in the book, it was caused by the betrayal of his own silver hand - he uncontrollably strangled himself after he hesitated (albeit for a moment) to kill harry.

    8. fred and george’s potterwatch reports

“i’m not being ‘rodent,’ no way, i told you i wanted to be ‘rapier’!”

“oh, all right then. ‘rapier,’ could you please give us your take on the various stories we’ve been hearing about the chief death eater?”

if it were up to me, every part of the book with fred and george in it would make it to the movies. i mean, only these two can pull off a joke or two while delivering reports about disappearances and deaths… and without being insensitive about them, either! i would love to see (or hear) lee’s, kingsley’s, and lupin’s parts as well!

    9. tonks’s parents

as she moved forward into the room, mrs. tonks’s resemblance to her sister bellatrix became much less pronounced: her hair was a light, soft brown and her eyes were wider and kinder. nevertheless, she looked a little haughty after harry’s exclamation.

like most minor characters in the harry potter series, ted and andromeda tonks were left out of the movies. in fact, their important participation in the seventh book was scrapped in the movie by changing the immediate safe house to the burrow instead of making a detour in the tonks residence. it’s understandable, yes, but i just thought that it would have been nice to see tonks’s parents in the movie as well.

P.S. i know some of these were released as “deleted scenes” featurettes, but the fact that they were left out of the official release kind of breaks my heart.
