    TOP9 songs: the eraserheads (fruitcake)

    (illustrations by paenguin)

i have a couple of christmas rituals… hearing mass, visiting relatives, watching love actually, eating queso de bola, giving gifts, exchanging cards (LOL… if you’re filipino, you’ll probably get it), but there is one thing i do every christmas that is a bit different from others: i listen to the fruitcake album while reading the fruitcake book. fruitcake is a concept christmas album by my favorite band, the eraserheads… it’s kinda like the sgt. pepper’s lonely hearts club band of the beatles. here are my TOP9 songs from the eraserheads’ christmas album, fruitcake:

    1.fruitcake

it may be a crime to refuse the top spot to the title song, but fruitcake is number one because it is also, in my opinion, the best song on the album. there are two versions of the song, by the way, but the only difference lies in the last two lines of the song. i prefer the one with the frannie wei reference.

it’s the season for being happy
but the reason is dead and gone
if the reason for being happy
    takes a backseat when the season’s done…

     2. styrosnow

they don’t have winter there in fruitcake heights (the fictional christmas town feature in the album/book), so it is quite impossible for the people to experience real snow. so, they just settle for styrosnow, which is “snow” literally made from styrofoam. kinda clever, huh?

    we just use our imagination
    because we have a lot
we know we shouldn’t be so picky
oh not when all we got is…

    3. the fabulous baker boy

buddy zabala was such a tease in the final set when he sang the first line of this song. i don’t think i’ll ever forget it. i just wished he continued singing the rest of the song after the “they come to me for doughnuts” part.

last x’mas papa died in a freak baking accident
    how i cried
too much flour and too much yeast
a costly mistake for the perfect fruitcake…

    4. trip to jerusalem

this song refers to both the journey of the three wise men to the birthplace of jesus (well, technically that was in bethlehem, but oh well) and the game of musical chairs, which was played by frannie wei in the book. it was released as a single and you can watch the music video here. it’s kinda old, so please bear with the quality.

    just when you think
    you’ve come so far
    you’ll find yourself
    back to the start…

    5. lightyears

before the reunion concert, this song reminded me of frannie wei’s longing for home. now, it only reminds me of that time when ely buendia was rushed to the hospital after singing this song.

    big dipper north of nowhere
outside the room inside my mind
    look forward to tomorrow
but can i leave yesterday behind?

    6. christmas party

all around the world. people make a change. c’mon and join the celebration!

peace on earth, goodwill to every man
it isn’t very hard to understand
so get into the groove of happiness
you got no choice but to feel like all the rest…

    7. gatekeeper

the gatekeeper of fruitcake heights is a century-old dumbledore look-a-like named bobo the wiseman. his name is kinda ironic, really, especially since the word “bobo” means stupid in tagalog.

tales so unordinary, alien and strange
she talked about yuletide war and corruption, nuclear gift exchange
(talk about) crime, slime on the grapevine
now i am inclined to let you in with her…

    8. old fashioned christmas carol

i blame this song every time i mix up the lyrics of different christmas carols. read the lyrics here and find out why.

come they told me the lord has come
    let earth in heavenly peace
    whispering dope, never smoke hope
    we’ll go down in history…history!

    9. christmas morning

do you know how we all try to be happier or be nicer to everyone on the 25th of december just because it’s christmas day? well, isn’t it better if we live like that everyday? anyway, i read somewhere that ely buendia wrote this for his daughter, una. now, how sweet is that?

let’s hope that the next year will be better than last year
and somehow we’ll all get by
    maybe the time will come
when we don’t need to pretend to be happy for just a while…
