    TOP9 filipino children’s games

trying to explain these games in english will be quite difficult, so please bear with me. i got a little help from larong bata and wikipilipinas, by the way. i’ve had this on my drafts for as long as i can remember, but as usual, i was too lazy to finish the text part. so, without further ado, here are my TOP9 children games from the philippines:

    1. tumbang preso

how to play: the first thing to do is to decide on a prisoner. this player will be responsible for guarding the empty tin can. meanwhile, the objective of the other players in a game of tumbang preso is pretty simple: to knock down the tin can… using their slippers. they stand in the throwing line and take turns in striking the tin can, with the hope that it will be knocked down before they all ran out of slippers to throw. once the tin can is knocked down, the players must retrieve their slippers before the prisoner puts the tin can back in an upright position. why? because once the prisoner puts the tin can back to its original position, he/she can tag any player who crosses the throwing line. the first player tagged by the prisoner will be the next guardian of the tin can.

    2. bahay-bahayan

how to play: well, bahay-bahayan is a role-playing game that recreates what life is like in a typical household. so, the players must first decide on which roles they want to portray: there’s the father, the mother, the kids, and if you have lots of players, you can still add a few grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins. there really aren’t any rules in this game. the players only rely on their imaginations to keep the storyline going.

    3. taguan

how to play: well, it’s just hide-and-seek. the players will go look for good places to hide while the “it” will try to seek each one of them. after they are caught, the hidden players must race the seeker to the “base” in order to avoid being the “it” of the next game. there is another version of this game that i really like. it is called taguang pangkat. well, it pretty much follows the same rules as the traditional taguan. but the only difference is that the number of players who seek is equal to the number of players who hide.

    4. patintero

how to play: before starting the actual game, the players must first draw a rectangle on the floor using chalk or charcoal. this rectangle will then be divided into equal parts - depending on how many kids are playing per team. ah yeah, the teams. the players of patintero are divided into two teams: the taggers and the runners. the taggers, who are positioned in the perpendicular lines of the rectangle, are responsible for preventing the runners from getting pass each line. in order to win, the runners must pass through all the lines and go back to the starting point without being caught by the taggers.

    5. ten-twenty

how to play: ten-twenty is a chinese garter game. it requires at least three players: to people to utilize the stretched garter and one person to do the ten-twenty jumping routine over the garter. the jumping routine consists of ten jumping exhibitions that are performed while chanting the answers to the tenth column of the multiplication table (10, 20, 30, 40, … all the way to 100). the player who manages to do the jumping routines perfectly despite the progressive higher positioning of the garter is considered the winner.

    6. piko

how to play: well, it’s just hopscotch. we just have a different name for it.

    7. langit-lupa

how to play: well, langit-lupa (literally meaning heaven and earth) is just another variation of tag. what makes it different from other tag games is that the “it” can only tag the players who are running on the ground (earth). players in elevated spaces (e.g. standing on top of rocks or chairs) are given temporary immunities because they are in “heaven.”

    8. luksong tinik

how to play: in this game, two players create the tinik (thorn) by positioning their feet together like this. this tinik will serve as a hurdle that the other players must jump over in order to make it to the next round. the players who create the tinik make the succeeding rounds more difficult by placing their hands on top of their feet, thus making the tinik higher. the player who successfully jumps over the highest tinik wins the game.

    9. syato

how to play: at least two players are needed in this game: a hitter and a catcher. the hitter starts this game by digging a small square hole where a short piece of wood will be placed. then, using a flat stick, he/she will try to hit that short piece of wood so that it will fly out of the hole. the hitter will then earn points depending on the distance traveled by the short piece of wood, that is… if the catcher fails to… well, catch it.
