TOP9 real madrid signings of 2010

due to the departure of rafael van der vaart, i realized that my TOP9 list of real madrid players is no longer appropriate. so, i decided to make a new one. unfortunately, the task of squeezing 25 talented players into a TOP9 list is just too difficult for me. since i don’t want to make a TOP9 list of injured merengues, i just settled on the newbies instead. so, here are my TOP9 real madrid signings for the year 2010:
1. jose mourinho, from inter milan
let’s take a look at mou’s record, shall we? champions league 2004, 2010; uefa cup: 2003; english premier league: 2005, 2006; english fa cup: 2007; english league cup: 2005, 2007; fa community shield: 2005; portuguese liga: 2003, 2004; portuguese cup: 2003; italian super cup: 2008; italian serie a: 2009, 2010; italian cup 2010. he is the special one, indeed. but did you notice what’s missing in his record? yes, he has yet to win a trophy from la liga. wouldn’t it be nice if he finally gets it this year (and next year, and the year after that, and the year after that…) with real madrid?
2. mesut ozil (23), from werder bremen
this young german has only played four official games (3 LFP plus 1 UCL) for real madrid and yet, the madridistas in santiago de bernabeu have already given him two well-deserved standing ovations: one during the osasuna game and the other during the uefa champions league game against ajax. i think los blancos have found a reliable playmaker in ozil. heck, he can even give cristiano ronaldo a run for his money in the assist department. by the way, is it just me or does ozil really look like diego luna?
3. ricardo carvalho (2), from chelsea f.c.
carvalho was the best player during the game against real sociedad, but not a lot of people noticed that. and it just makes me sad because he works so hard to keep the team’s defense solid and yet he still doesn’t get enough credit for it. but remember this: carvalho scored the first real madrid goal of the season during that match against osasuna.
4. angel di maria (22), from s.l. benfica
i can’t believe i’m writing about angel di maria again. as i have mentioned in my TOP9 argentine football players post, di maria has always been fun to watch. i just find it amusing that he manages to keep possession of the ball regardless of how many times he loses his balance (he falls down a lot, doesn’t he?). anyway, i think he is quickly adapting to the team (being a native speaker of spanish is really an advantage). i hope that he will continue to improve his game because i want to see more of his heart-shaped hand gestures in the future.
5. sergio canales (16), from racing santander
at the young age of 19, sergio canales is proving to be a favorite not only of mourinho and his fellow players *cough*cristiano*cough* but of madridistas as well. i mean, what’s not to like? the kid obviously is talented. he is an effective attacker, an accurate passer, and a decent striker. besides, he really is cute. even guys develop mancrushes on him (although i’m not sure if it’s because of his good looks or his football skills or both. yeah, i think it’s both). anyway, i feel really bad that he sprained his ankle. i was really hoping to see canales play in the next game, but now it’s not really going to happen. according to reports, the younger sergio will be out for two or three weeks because of his injury. :(
6. pedro leon (21), from getafe c.f.
this guy is really growing on me. i hope he gets more playing time in the next games. i swear, pedro leon is improving really well that he even deserves to be in the starting eleven.
7. sami khedira (24), from vfb stuttgart
to quote the boys from the real madrid blog in theoffside: “sami khedira is unspectacular, but does his job well.” it hasn’t been long since he joined los merengues, so i guess khedira is still adapting not only to the team but also to his life in spain. i read somewhere that he, along with ozil, is having a hard time with the language barrier. i guess they better find an amazing spanish tutor for these germans soon. after all, good communication lines between teammates are essential for a more solid team performance.
8. david mateos ramajo (15), from the rm youth system
i’m not really familiar with mateos because i haven’t seen him play. he wasn’t even included in that commemorative photo of real madrid’s new signings. the only thing i know about him is that he was promoted from the youth system to the first team. and yeah, like most real madrid players, mateos is quite good-looking.
9. the special one’s precious notepad
okay. i cheated. but what can i do? real madrid only signed seven players this year. seven players plus mourinho is just eight and this is supposed to be a TOP9 list. so unless you want me to include bastian schweinsteiger already, i’ll stick with the precious notepad where mourinho scribbles on during games
since it has more game appearances than jerzy dudek or mahamadou diarra. if you’re curious about the contents of the special one’s notepad, then please follow jose’s blackbook. i swear, it’s really funny. -
